PA Spanish-American WarBiography of a PA soldier, John Brown
John C., son of Noah and Eliza Jane (Lawrence) Brown, was born at the farm in South Union township, Fayette county, Pennsylvania, November 14, 1875.
He was educated in the public school and worked upon the home farm until the outbreak of the Spanish-American war, when he enlisted June 25, 1898, in Company C, Tenth Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers. He was in camp at San Francisco five weeks, then embarked on the transport "Arizona." Their first landing was at Honolulu, a distance of twenty-one hundred and eighty miles, where the regiment was encamped ten weeks, then were ordered on to the Philippines, where he served until the regiment was ordered home and mustered out August 23, 1899.
During the World's Fair held at St. Louis, Missouri, in 1904, he was one of the Park Guards organized to police the grounds.
He then settled down to farming in South Union and is now so engaged. He is a member of the "Army of the Philippines," Camp De Saloma, named from a church in the Philippines. He also belongs to Uniontown Eyrie, Fraternal Order of Eagles. He is unmarried.
