PA Spanish-American WarBiography of a PA soldier, Albert Buttermore
Albert J. Buttermore
entered the military service of the state of Pennsylvania in the National Guard in 1888. After a service of ten years the Spanish-American war broke out, and he at once offered his services. He was Mustered In to the service of the United States May 12, 1898, with Company D, Tenth Regiment, National Guard of Pennsylvania, as second lieutenant of the company. The Tenth Regiment was sent to the Philippines, where they were engaged in the land battle of Manila. During the insurrection headed by Aguinaldo, they were in service continuously on the Island of Luzon, and took prominent part in thirty-five engagements with their brown enemies.
Lieutenant Buttermore served through this campaign with distinction, and won promotion to the rank of first lieutenant two weeks before the Tenth Regiment sailed for the United States, receiving his commission after returning to his home. He was mustered out August 22, 1899, at San Francisco.
He is a Democrat in politics; a member, as is his wife, of the Christian church. He belongs also to the Knights of the Maccabees, and the Improved Order of Heptasophs. He resides at 113 Crawford avenue, where he built a home in 1905. He married, January 12, 1893, Grace Robinson, born in Dunbar township, Fayette county, Pennsylvania, daughter of James and Sarah Robinson (see Robinson-White line). Children of Albert J. Buttermore; Arthur Provance, born August 16, 1894; Pearl, January 10, 1896.
