GRIDELY, Charles V., Commander of USS Olympia, the flagship of Admiral George Dewey, born November 24, 1844, died June 5, 1898, buried Lakeside Cemetery, Erie, Erie County, PA. At the beginning of the Battle of Manila Bay, Admiral Dewey said "You May Fire When Ready, Gridley" to start his bombardment of Spanish ships. The phrase was widely reported by American newspapers.
