PA Spanish American WarArmy OrganizationThe Army for the Spanish-American War consisted of regular units and volunteer units.Regular Army Regular army units were designated as U.S. units with a regiment number, such as the 1st U.S. Infantry or 6th U.S. Artillery. There is a card file for Pennsylvania veterans of the regular units. Volunteer Army The Volunteer Army was the state militia or National Guard. These units were designated by regiment number and state, such as 1st PA Infantry. PA Volunteer Army Organization of the Army InfantryCompanyThe basic unit is the company commanded by a Captain. Each company has 100 men. Regiments and Battalions There are 10 Companies in a Regiment commanded by a Colonel. There are 4-8 Companies in a Battalion commanded by a Major or Lt. Col. Brigade There are 3-6 Regiments in a Brigade commanded by a Brigadier General. Division There are 2-6 Brigades in a Division commanded by a Major General. Corps There 2-4 Divisions in a Corps commanded by a Major General. Organization of the Army CavalryTroopThe basic unit is the troop commanded by a Captain. Each troop has 100 men. Regiments and Battalions There are 10 Troops in a Regiment commanded by a Colonel. There are 4-8 Companies in a Battalion commanded by a Major or Lt. Col. Organization of the Army ArtilleryThe basic unit is the battery commanded by a Captain. Artillery was subdivided into Heavy Artillery or Light Artillery. |
